July 1, 2008 – Extreme Broadband Engineering identifies its VoIP/Cable Modem data port with a distinctive blue color and label. For many years this data connection to the VoIP/Cable modem on the company’s Data Plus splitters, Modem Modules and amplifiers has been their unique trade dress/trade mark. Over time, it has become very common to see this distinctive blue port/blue label in the field as more data products from Extreme have been installed in VoIP/Cable Modem networks around the country. Many installers have indicated that they appreciate the fact that it is immediately identifiable as the data port, because it reduces confusion and helps simplify training of new installation techs.

Now, for a nominal license fee, Extreme Broadband Engineering is offering to share this feature of its trade dress with any manufacturer that wishes to incorporate the blue port and label on their components’ data connection. “We think other manufacturers may want to adopt the blue data port and label for their own Data Products,” commented Jay Shapson, Managing Member of Extreme Broadband Engineering, LLC“ but rather than benefiting directly from any profits the exchange of this part of our trade dress might yield, we would donate all licensing revenues to the SCTE Foundation.”
